The world of Nightwatch was never meant to belong to a single story.
From the fog-covered canals of Europe to the jungles of South America, from isolated frontier towns to industrial megacities shaped by rifts and anomalies, Nightwatch is a setting built on the idea that every nation, culture, and community would respond differently to the unknown.
The purpose of the Nightwatch Open Content License (NOCL) is to encourage creators from all over the world to explore those possibilities together.
We want writers, artists, designers, and game masters to imagine:
-
What would anomalous containment look like in their homeland?
-
How would local folklore, politics, religion, and industry shape humanity’s response to the unknown?
-
What organizations, conspiracies, or catastrophes would emerge in a world where rifts became part of history?
Through this license, creators are invited to build their own corners of the Nightwatch universe—whether through adventures, factions, field reports, Fortune Cards, local campaigns, or entirely new perspectives on the setting.
At the same time, the NOCL exists to protect the core identity of Nightwatch and ensure that the universe can continue to grow in a cohesive and meaningful way.
We strongly believe that collaboration is what keeps worlds alive.
Some of the most compelling ideas come from people exploring the setting through the lens of their own history, myths, architecture, politics, and cultural experiences.
Whether you are creating stories set in the Dutch East Indies, the American frontier, the Ottoman Empire, Meiji Japan, the Congo, the Arctic, or beyond—we would love to see what Nightwatch looks like through your eyes.

You may not reference, describe, or imply Product Identity elements in a way that:

Content shall be considered derivative of Nightwatch Product Identity if it reproduces or closely imitates identifiable elements of the setting, as reasonably determined by Radio Retrofuture, including but not limited to:

The use of horned-owl symbolism, numeric identifiers, ritual markers, or internal hierarchies characteristic of said organization.

Narrative framing that presents such elements as part of an established, coordinated global effort tied to anomalous phenomena.
Any such use constitutes use of Product Identity and requires permission.
Creators are encouraged to seek written permission from Radio Retrofuture when making substantial use of Nightwatch Product Identity, including recurring factions, extended narrative use, or prominent placement within a Licensed Work.
Projects that receive such permission may be eligible for additional support, visibility, or designation as approved content.

The existence of anomalous portals or “rifts” .

Acknowledge the existence of canonical factions, characters, creatures, and anomalies.

A late 19th-century alternate history setting
These elements must be presented in an original manner and must not reproduce or derive from specific Nightwatch lore.

Creators may develop original content within a framework inspired by the general themes of Nightwatch, including:
-
A fragmented or decentralized international response to anomalous phenomena
-
The existence of overlapping jurisdictions, secrecy, and limited coordination between agencies

A world in which technology, science, and the unknown intersect in unstable ways

Radio Retrofuture may, at its discretion, recognize certain Licensed Works as “Approved Nightwatch Content”.
Such recognition is granted separately and may include additional permissions regarding the use of Product Identity.
